When I talk to people about baptisms, I get a lot of the same questions. The first question, “Do I have to do this in front of people? Or can I do a private baptism?” Jesus answered that question in Luke 12:8, where he said, “I tell you the truth, if you acknowledge me publicly here on this earth, I will acknowledge you in heaven.” So Jesus is saying it’s important that people know we’re followers of Jesus and being baptized is a way to show that; to show your profession of faith.
The second question, “Do I have to get baptized even though my parents had me baptized as a baby?” I think it’s wonderful that parents choose to baptize their children, in fact, my parents baptized me when I was a baby. But that’s a decision based on the parents faith, not the baby’s. And though I appreciate my parents baptizing me, when I came to the knowledge of Jesus and what Jesus meant to me when I accepted him as my Savior, I wanted it to be my decision to be baptized; because it was about my faith. So yes, it’s very appropriate once you’ve made the decision for Christ, to make it your personal decision to be baptized.
If you’ve not been baptized before, and you have asked Jesus into your heart, think about making the decision to come forward this weekend to be baptized. If you were baptized as a child and feel lost in your faith and relationship with Jesus, we encourage you to come forward and be baptized this weekend as well. Why don’t you meet me at Gold Creek Community Church this Sunday, and we’ll baptize you and celebrate your faith!
