Our family loves the outdoors. Whether it’s hiking in the mountains, water skiing on Hood Canal during the summer, or getting ready to hit the slopes for some skiing in the winter. We love it all! One of the jobs I take on as a dad, is getting my family down the right hills and slopes in life. Often, I’m asked when skiing, “Hey Dad, can we go down this hill?” Usually the answer is yes, but there are times that the answer has to be no. But as my kids have grown older and have gotten better at skiing, they can handle more.
Just a couple years ago, we were at Jackson Hole skiing, and decided to take the tram up to the Rendezvous Bowl, which is the very top of Jackson Hole. We got all the way up to the top, and over the loudspeaker the announcer said, “Warning: This hill is for experts only. If you’re not an expert, we advise you to go back down.” My kids looked at me with big eyes like, “Can we do this Dad?” And I said, “Yes, we can do it!” We got off the tram, but there were plenty of people who weren’t ready and went back down the hill. We clicked into our skis, and we headed down the hill. My kids stopped and looked at me and said, “Dad, we don’t know if we can do this.” And I said, “Trust me, you can do this! Remember what you’ve been taught, and you’ll do great.” As we skied down the hill, I’ll admit, it was pretty steep, they did great. I kept on encouraging them, “Hey, keep it up. Good turns, you got this.” When we got down to the bottom of the hill, their confidence was soaring. They were high fiving each other, they made it. They made it down one of the biggest runs.
This experience made me think about Jeremiah 17:7, which says, “Trust in the Lord. For he who trusts in the Lord will have confidence in him. To trust in him.” I think that’s what God wants for us to do is to trust in him in all things. Yes, on the ski slope, but also in life. And while it’s taken years for my kids to get ready for that run, it takes dedication and practice for us to be ready for what might be thrown at us.
My encouragement for you is to trust in the Lord daily. Seek him out in your daily reading and prayer time. And don’t forget to get out and have fun with your family. We’re gonna hit the slopes…We’ll see you out there!
