The current Sermon Series in our adult ministry is called “Watching Oscar,” which focuses on the commentary from this year’s Oscar nominated movies. If I’m being honest with you, I haven’t seen a single movie from the list! Going to the movies tends to be a luxury for my husband and me. We have two kids ages three and one, so going out requires a free night and a babysitter, so we don’t get to do it very often.
We have gone to a movie just recently though, and when I walked into the theater, I was so excited to see huge, plushy, comfy reclining chairs. I had my snacks all around me, I got to recline back; I almost wanted to take a nap! Something as simple as going to see a movie was really special for us. It’s funny how every day we get so trapped into our routines, day in,day out, same thing everyday. We forget to notice the good things God has given us. Going to see a movie really gave me a fresh pair of eyes on my own life. By the time we went to pick the kids up from my mom’s house, I was so excited to have them back in my arms.
I was thinking about a verse in Proverbs that says, “Joy is good medicine for the soul.” And it got me thinking, “Wow, something as simple as joy does so much for us!” It’s easy to forget about that joy, or to lose that joy, when you have the same routine and you do the same thing all the time.
I challenge you this week to do something different. Go see a movie, go on a date, go have a cup of coffee by yourself. Do something different out of your normal routine, because when you come back in, you’ll have a fresh perspective on your life, and you’ll notice all the good things God has given you. Have a great week, and I’ll see you on Sunday!
