Tis’ the season for cold fall mornings and Pumpkin Spice lattes. My husband loves Pumpkin Spice lattes and every time I get one, I think of him. We had our youngest son in October and I remember at 4 o’clock in the morning waking up and saying, “It’s time to go to the hospital!” On our way to the hospital I realized, that for my husband, the next foreseeable future would be spent taking care of our newborn, toddler, and me and he needed something for himself. We stopped by Starbucks and got him his favorite Pumpkin Spice latte and he had that opportunity to refresh himself and get ready for the madness to come.
“When we are distracted, we don’t practice any self care and there’s not enough of us to go around.”
God gives us so many good things in our lives, but it’s easy to get distracted by the to-do-lists, the kids, the husbands, the house, and the jobs. When we are distracted, we don’t practice any self care and there’s not enough of us to go around. God gives us the desire for community and communication, and we want these things, but we need to take care of ourselves first.
I don’t know what self care looks like to you, but for my husband, it’s watching the week’s sermon with his cup of Pumpkin Spice latte on the way to work. For me, it’s waking up before the kids get up, having my cup of tea and reading a book. Maybe for you it’s carving out thirty minutes a night to watch your favorite TV show. Whatever it is, find it and practice self care, so you can refresh yourself and have more to give to everyone that’s demanding attention from you during the week.
